Essential immigration and insurance information for international students.

Applying for a Visa

Before studying or teaching in Korea, you must apply for the appropriate visa at an overseas Korean embassy or consulate. Please check with the nearest overseas embassy or consulate for instructions on visa application as it may vary by location. Once approved, please check your visa’s expiration date. You may need to apply for an extension prior to departure.

Visa Types

  • Student Visa (D-2): Degree-seeking or exchange students
  • Research Student Visa (D-2-5): Research activities only (no coursework)
  • Training Visa (D-4): Korean language programs
  • Research Visa (E-3): Research activities at institutions or labs
  • Professorship Visa (E-1): Teaching and lecturing
  • Overseas Korean Visa (F-4)

HiKorea Website

HiKorea is the main site of the electronic government for foreigners, jointly created by the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Ministry of Labor. It was created with the purpose of providing investment, employment, residence and everyday living related information and services from a single source to foreigners visiting Korea.

How to register Residence Card

For alien registration that requires an in-person application, visit reservation must be made through HiKorea website.

  • STEP 1 Click “Reserve Visit” and proceed as a non-member.
  • STEP 2 Identify yourself using your passport number; available at least one day after entering Korea.
  • STEP 3 Ulsan Immigration Office
  • STEP 4 Complete the reservation form and click “Apply”. Be sure to print or screenshot the confirmation page.

How to register other immigration affairs

Except for alien registration, almost all application for immigration affairs (alteration of residence, change of information on alien registration, re-entry permit, part-time work permit, extension of sojourn period, etc.) can be made online through HiKorea website.

  • STEP 1 Join the HiKorea website using your alien registration information.
  • STEP 2 Click “Petition Application” to proceed.
  • STEP 3 Select the application type and continue. Required documents must be uploaded as a PDF or image file. Some applications may require an application fee.
  • STEP 4 After submission, regularly check “e-Petition Application Status” on the homepage. The office may reject the application or request additional documents.

Residence Card (RC) Application Guide (Updated) All non-Korean exchange and visiting students at SGU must complete their foreign resident registration at the immigration office within 90 days of arrival in Korea.

Application Procedure

  • Method: You must make a reservation in advance through HiKorea before visiting the immigration office.
  • Application Fee: 35,000 KRW (Effective for all applications since Jan 1, 2025). Ministry of Justice Fee Increase Notice
  • Note: Existing cards remain valid until their expiration date; the new fee applies only to new issuances or reissuances.

Required Documents

  • Common Documents: Integrated Application Form, Passport, Certificate of Enrollment (issued by SGU), and application fee
  • Proof of Residence: Dormitory Residence Certificate (issued via mySGU) or Housing Lease Contract
  • TB Test Result: Mandatory for students from high TB-burden countries (approximately 35 countries, including China, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.) who did not submit TB results during visa application

Helpful Tips

  • Mobile Residence Card: After receiving the IC-embedded physical card, you can issue a digital version via the Mobile ID App for added convenience
  • Group Application: At the beginning of each semester, the SGU Office of International Affairs (OIA) often opens an online group application period through a partner agency (e.g., HireVisa), allowing applications without an in-person immigration visit

Loss & Reissuance

If you lose your card, you must apply for reissuance within 14 days. The fee is also 35,000 KRW.

Eligibility & Enrollment Timing

  • Study (D-2) & School Students (D-4-3)
    • First Entry: Enrolled on the date of foreign resident registration
    • Re-entry: Enrolled on the re-entry date
  • General Training (D-4): Enrolled 6 months after the entry date
  • Overseas Korean Students: Enrolled on the date of school admission (proof of enrollment required)

Enrollment Procedure

  • Automatic Subscription: Students are automatically enrolled by NHIS once registration is completed
  • Documentation: NHIS card and guidance will be mailed to your Korean address
  • Visit an NHIS Center if you:
    • Wish to pay insurance contributions together with family members (spouse/minor children)
    • Hold an F-4 visa
    • Need to report changes (address, passport, or visa)

Contributions (Insurance Fees)

  • Monthly Contribution (2026): Approximately 77,000 ~ 79,000 KRW (estimated based on the 2026 premium rate of 7.19%)
  • Due Date: Pre-payment for the following month is due by the 25th of the current month
  • Payment Methods: Automatic bank transfer (recommended), NHIS website, bank, or NHIS office

Insurance Benefits

  • Equal Coverage: Same benefits as Korean citizens, including dental care, oriental medicine, and health check-ups
  • General Health Check-ups: Provided every two years based on birth year
  • Example: In 2026, individuals born in even-numbered years (e.g., 1998, 2000) are eligible for free check-ups, including cervical cancer screening for female students

Consequences of Non-payment

  • Benefit Restrictions: Medical benefits are suspended from the 1st day of the following month until payment is completed
  • Visa Restrictions: Immigration authorities may refuse visa extensions
  • Seizure: Compulsory collection measures (such as asset seizure) may be taken if payment is significantly delayed

General Inquiries

Report of Change in Foreign Resident Registration Information

If any of the following information changes after registration, it must be reported within 14 days. Failure to report may result in a fine.

  • Reportable Items: Residential address, passport information (number, issuance date, expiration date)
  • How to Report:
    • Online via HiKorea
    • Visit the jurisdictional Immigration Office (reservation required)
    • Visit a local community service center (address changes only)
  • Fee: Free of charge

Re-entry Permit

Most long-term residents (including D-2 visa holders) planning to leave Korea and return must check whether a re-entry permit is required before departure.

  • Exemptions: D-2 visa holders are generally exempt if they return within 1 year from the date of departure or within the remaining period of stay. Please verify your status on HiKorea.
  • Required Documents: Application form, passport, residence card

Part-time Work Permit

International students must obtain prior permission from the Immigration Office before starting any part-time job. Working without authorization is illegal and may result in fines or deportation.

  • Procedure:
    • Find a job and sign a Standard Labor Contract
    • Complete the Part-time Work Confirmation Form with your employer and obtain approval from the university OIA
    • Make a reservation and submit all required documents to the Immigration Office
  • Important: The approval process may take over one month. You must not begin working until final approval is granted by the Immigration Office.
